Case Study 2: Wireless and Mobile Technologies

Introduction

The advancement of wireless technology and mobile technologies has been playing an important role in the success of transportation industry.  This paper will, first, define wireless technologies and mobile technologies. Second, the paper will determine at least three (3) ways which companies or organizations utilize such technologies to improve business efficiency.  Third, the paper will identify the wireless technologies and mobile technologies that Delta has implemented. Fourth, the paper will evaluate the level of effectiveness of the technology implementation. Fifth, the article will provide a rationale for the response.  Sixth, the paper will specify the overall way Delta implements organizational systems, wireless technologies, and mobile technologies, and will evaluate and give a rationale for the level of efficiency of such implementation within the small business. Next, the paper will provide an opinion as to which company (i.e., Delta or the small business research) is using the mobile and wireless technologies more strategically, and the paper will justify the responses. Further, the paper will determine the operational and enterprise systems that support wireless and mobile technologies for each company. Lastly, the article will provide a rationale for the responses and a conclusion.

According to Melanie Pinola (2017), the wireless and mobile technology defined as a broad term that encloses all sorts of techniques and devices that transmit data over the air rather than over wires, including mobile and wireless communications, networking between computers with cordless adapters and wireless computer accessories. According to Shawn Hessinger (2013), the author discussed that small businesses utilize smartphones and tablets. Further on this topic, Joshua Sophy (2013), added the third way (mobile app). Small businesses used 85 percent of smartphones and 69% of tablets and only 31 percent of the mobile app. According to Michael Meehan (2001), the author suggested Delta airline was transforming its fare searching and ticketing system in to web friendly functions. According to Staff Writer (2012), Delta Airlines implemented the in-flight wifi in its domestic mainline aircraft to keep the customers connected to ground while they are traveling on air and also applied smartphone app for flight check-in and to baggage tracking. According to Rene Millman (2017), the author evaluated and discussed the high level of efficiency of technology implementation and the enterprise wireless networks are in increasing demand. According to Rene Millman (2017), the author also suggested many rationales for the efficiency of technology implementation. For example, the emergence of wireless standard 802.11ac Wave 2, 802.11ad – Bluetooth on steroids, Wireless IoT identity management and roaming i.e. with the rise of IoT the new identity providers emerge, the capability of Wi-Fi to track and locate devices. According to staff writer (2012), the author specified Delta’s technology implementation and said, “The popular Fly Delta app was launched on the iPhone in the fall of 2010. BlackBerry, Android and Windows versions followed soon after.  The apps provide eBoarding check-in options in 79 cities worldwide, the ability to track and pay for bags, alerts for updated travel information, airport and aircraft details, and a parking reminder. Delta's Ticket Counter allows Facebook users to check-in for their upcoming flight using a dedicated "tab" at facebook.com/delta without navigating to delta.com. Innovative tools like the Delta Away We Go app lets customers share and plan their travel with family and friends.” And the author suggested that the implementation was efficient and Delta airline served more than 160 million customers and was identified by Fortune magazine as the most appreciated airline worldwide in its 2011 World's Most appreciated Companies airline industry list. According to Steven Scheck (2016), almost 64% of small business customers will access online content through their devices by 2017. This strategy will unlock an overabundance of opportunities for their business. As Staff Writer (2013), mentioned Delta’s strategy which is also strong on socio-media to make easy access to its platform. According to the Staff Writer (2012) and Rene Millman (2017) wifi is playing a vital role in supporting the operational and enterprise system of wireless and mobile technologies for each company.

In conclusion, the paper defined the wireless and mobile technology as a broad term that encompasses all sorts of technologies and devices that transmit data over the air rather than over wires, including mobile and cellular communications, networking between computers with wireless adapters and wireless computer accessories. Second, the paper determined at least the three ways (laptops, smartphones, tablets and the mobile apps) that the companies utilize to improve their business efficiency. Third, the paper determined the wireless and mobile technologies that Delta implemented. Next, the paper identified the operational and enterprise systems that support wireless and mobile technologies for each company and provided a rationale for the responses.
