In computing, virtualization refers
to the latest technological act of creating a logical (or virtual) rather than physical
(or actual) version of something, including virtual computer hardware
platforms, storage devices, and computer network resources. The paper, by assuming
the Virtual Machine Ware (VMW), Hyper -V and VirtualBox (HyperV2), will
do: rubric #1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, and give a brief conclusion.
According
to JanBask Training (2017), the author discussed the contrast and the
comparison of the topic as illustrated in table 1 below.
Table 1
Comparison and Contrasting of VM, Hyper-V, and
VirtualBox
|
Components |
VMWare |
Hyper-V |
VirtualBox |
|
1.
Standard Configuration |
VMware is a
set of associated tools and applications and is not a single product. It can
be used to manage mobile or handheld devices, to set up any private cloud
for any staff. |
Installed
on the operating system and is a hybrid hyper version. It redesigns the operating system
architecture and reflects only the hardware objects of the accompanying
system. |
Open Source and core application. |
|
2.
Hardware Requirements Price and Associated Cost |
The
workstation stuff is free and available as a trial version. |
Cost
effective and appealing machine for some enterprises. |
Personal Use Evaluation License (PUEL) plus
upgrade package is free for a more extended
period. |
Rubric #1b
According to Collins (2016), the author discussed
that pros and cons of VMware and HyPER-V as presented in table 2 below.
Table 2 Pros and Cons of VMware
and Hyper-V
|
Pros
and Cons of VMWare and Hyper-V |
|
|
VMware |
Hyper-V |
|
Pros: · Intuitive use · High-quality support availability · Maybe an optimal fit for major enterprises · Broad OS support · Offers access to governance capabilities · Transparent page sharing ·
Offers higher
guests per host (512 vs. 384) Cons: · Free and trial versions do not offer full
functionality ·
Reported steep
learning curve |
Pros: ·
Can deploy new virtual servers in minutes ·
Maintenance does not result in downtime ·
Simple live migrations ·
Easy backups ·
Comprehensive security through Windows Active
Directory ·
Lower priced Cons: · Hyper-V (2012R2) supports a limited number of guest
OS choices: see here
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn792027(v=ws.11).aspx for a
comprehensive list. · Requires Windows OS upgrades during product lifetime ·
Poor or missing
support for RemoteFX and Service Templates in System Center Virtual Machine
Manager 2012 R2 |
Below in table 3, Vugt (2018), discussed
pros and cons of VMware and VirtualBox.
Table 3 Pros and
Cons of VMware and VirtualBox
|
Pros
and Cons of VMware and VirtualBox |
|
|
VirtualBox |
VMware |
|
Pros: ·
Install the hypervisor as an application on top of an
existing OS. ·
Uses the host's OS to call for resources ·
Supports guest
VMs. ·
Being free. Cons: · Not the only way administrators use hypervisors
nowadays. ·
Has a feature
that targets a different use case. ·
Requires Hardware virtualization extension. |
Pros: ·
End users can efficiently
run a VM on a personal computing device. ·
Healthy
Competitor with VirtualBox. ·
Does not need
Hardware. Cons: ·
Able to automatically deploy a VM that is running on top of VirtualBox. ·
It costs $249 for new license. |
Since
they are becoming healthy competitors, and it is hard to rationalize one is the
best; still VirtualBox is free.
Therefore, the paper recommended it.
Rubric #1c
According
to ESDS (2014), the author suggested that the advantages and disadvantages of
VMware, Hyper-V, and VirtualBox in
virtualization is illustrated below in table 4.
Table 4
Advantages and Disadvantages of VMware, Hyper-V, and VirtualBox
|
Advantages
of VMware, VirtualBox, and Hyper-V |
Disadvantages
of VMware, VirtualBox, and Hyper-V |
|
1.
Not easy to access hardware. 2.
Needs to be configured, monitored and saved. 3.
Higher processing
cost. 4.
Higher RAM
consumption. 5.
Higher disk space
utilization. |
Yes. The paper used the above illustration
as a rationale to support position that virtualization is right for organizations.
Rubric #1d
According
to Lombardo (n.d), the author discussed that the advantages and disadvantages
of virtualization as indicated in table 5 below.
Table 5
Advantages and Disadvantages of Virtualization
|
Requirements |
Advantages |
Disadvantages |
|
1.
Computer |
Needs no local server |
Difficult to save a document file with
local storage. |
|
2.
Initial Cost |
It keeps cost predictable. |
It can have high cost of implementation. |
|
3.
Future Saving |
Once valid system established, large
amount saving for not needing large areas of space and huge monetary
investments. |
Because of extra steps that must be
followed to generate the desired result, it costs users time in long-run. |
Conclusion
The
paper did rubric #1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d.
